What Is Covered
Does Medi-Cal Cover Braces?
In California, the programme that can cover braces is Medi-Cal, through its dental side, Medi-Cal Dental, which nearly everyone still calls Denti-Cal. They are the same thing.
It covers orthodontic treatment for members under 21 when there is a medical need, such as a severe bite problem, rather than for appearance alone. Treatment must be approved before it starts, and that approval is based on records and X-rays we take and submit for you. Coverage for adults 21 and over is limited.
Whether a specific case qualifies is decided by Medi-Cal Dental, not by our office. We can tell you quickly whether it is worth submitting, and we do not charge to look.
Medicare is a different programme, and it does not cover braces.
Medicare is federal and built around hospital and medical care. Some Medicare Advantage plans add dental benefits, but those rarely extend to orthodontic treatment. If you are not sure which one you have, call us with your card and we will tell you where you stand.
How It Works
We Handle the Approval
Call Us With Your Card
Give us the member ID on your Medi-Cal card. We check eligibility while you are on the phone, and there is no charge for it.
We Submit for Approval
Medi-Cal Dental has to approve orthodontic treatment before it starts. We prepare and submit that paperwork, including the records and X-rays it requires.
Treatment Begins
Once approved, treatment is scheduled at whichever of our four offices is easiest for you to reach.

If Medi-Cal does not cover the treatment, or the patient is 21 or over, our price is $3,599 all-inclusive. That covers X-rays, records, every adjustment visit, retainers and emergency care. There is nothing added later.
Most families spread it out: $400 down, then $169 a month for 19 months, at 0% interest. The payments add up to the same $3,599, so there is no finance charge.
