Braces 101
Brushing & Flossing With Braces
Good hygiene during treatment protects your teeth from permanent damage. Here's exactly how to do it right.
Why It Matters
More Surfaces, More Risk
Brackets and wires create dozens of new surfaces where plaque and food can hide. Without thorough cleaning, you risk two things that can permanently mark your teeth:
- White spots (decalcification): Permanent white marks left behind after brackets are removed, caused by acid erosion around bracket edges.
- Cavities and gum disease: Plaque buildup leads to decay and gingivitis, which can interrupt treatment.
The good news: with the right routine and tools, keeping your teeth clean during treatment is very manageable.
Daily Routine
- 1.Rinse with water to loosen any food particles
- 2.Brush with a soft-bristle brush at a 45° angle to the gumline
- 3.Brush each bracket individually — top, bottom, and sides
- 4.Floss using a threader or orthodontic flosser between every tooth
- 5.Use an interdental brush to sweep under the archwire
- 6.Rinse with fluoride mouthwash
Technique
How to Brush With Braces
Angle the brush
Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline. This angle lets bristles reach under the gum tissue where plaque hides.
Clean each bracket
Brush above each bracket, then below it — don't just brush across them in one swipe. Each bracket needs individual attention to remove plaque from around its edges.
Brush 3× daily
Brush after every meal or snack. At minimum: morning, after lunch or school, and before bed. Carry a travel kit if possible.
Your Toolkit
Recommended Tools
Soft-bristle toothbrush
Reaches around brackets without damaging them. Electric toothbrush is ideal.
Floss threader or orthodontic flosser
Lets you thread floss under the archwire to reach between each tooth.
Water Flosser (Waterpik)
Highly effective for flushing food from around brackets. A great supplement to regular flossing.
Interdental (proxy) brush
The small Christmas-tree shaped brush that slides under wires to clean between brackets.
Fluoride mouthwash
Rinse daily to protect enamel and reduce decalcification risk.
