Getting your braces removed is one of the most exciting moments in orthodontic treatment. The process takes about an hour — Dr. Kamdar or a technician carefully removes each bracket, polishes off the adhesive, and you see your new smile for the first time.
But the appointment does not end there. Before you leave, you will be fitted for your retainers.
Why Retainers Are Non-Negotiable
Teeth do not stay in their new positions on their own. The bone and ligaments around your teeth need time — often 12 months or more — to fully stabilize. During this period, there is a natural tendency for teeth to drift back toward their original positions.
Retainers are what prevent that from happening. Skipping your retainer is the single most common reason people end up with shifted teeth after braces.
Types of Retainers
**Clear removable retainers** (Essix retainers) are the most common type at Platinum Orthodontics. They look like Invisalign aligners and are worn over your teeth. They are comfortable, nearly invisible, and easy to clean.
**Fixed retainers** are thin wires bonded to the back of your front teeth. They are always in place and require no compliance — but they do need to be cleaned carefully, and they can occasionally break.
Many patients use both: a fixed retainer on the lower front teeth (where shifting is most common) and a clear removable retainer on top.
How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?
The honest answer: for as long as you want your teeth to stay straight.
Typically, we recommend wearing retainers full time (20+ hours per day) for the first 3 to 6 months after braces come off. After that, nightly wear is usually sufficient.
Many adults who wore braces as teenagers and were told they could "stop wearing their retainer" eventually see their teeth shift. The lesson: nights-only retainer wear, long-term, is the standard recommendation today.
What If You Lose or Break a Retainer?
Contact our office immediately. Do not wait — even a few weeks without a retainer can result in noticeable shifting. Replacement retainers are available and affordable.
