5 Signs Your Child Needs Early Orthodontic Treatment

Dr. Rashid Kamdar·February 14, 2024

What Is Phase 1 Treatment?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic screening by age 7. At this point, enough permanent teeth have come in for Dr. Kamdar to spot developing problems — even before all baby teeth are gone.

Early treatment (Phase 1) typically occurs between ages 7 and 10, while the jaw is still growing and more easily guided. It does not mean your child will avoid braces later — but it can make Phase 2 treatment shorter, simpler, and less expensive.

Sign #1: Crowded or Crooked Teeth

If your child's teeth are visibly crowded or overlapping, it may mean their jaw does not have enough room for permanent teeth to erupt correctly. Early intervention can expand the arch and create space, preventing more severe crowding later.

Sign #2: Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth

Baby teeth typically fall out between ages 6 and 12. Losing them too early (before age 5) or too late (still present after age 13) can affect how permanent teeth come in. Dr. Kamdar can monitor timing and act if needed.

Sign #3: Difficulty Chewing or Biting

If your child regularly complains that chewing is uncomfortable, or you notice they favor one side of their mouth, this can indicate a bite problem — such as an overbite, underbite, or crossbite — that is much easier to correct while the jaw is still developing.

Sign #4: Mouth Breathing and Thumb Sucking Past Age 5

Habitual mouth breathing and prolonged thumb sucking can reshape the palate and affect how teeth come in. These habits, if not addressed early, can lead to open bites and narrow arches that require more complex correction later.

Sign #5: Protruding Front Teeth

Front teeth that stick out significantly (overjet) are more prone to injury during play and sports. Early treatment can bring them into a safer, more natural position while also improving your child's confidence.

What Happens at an Early Orthodontic Exam?

Dr. Kamdar will take digital X-rays, review your child's dental history, and discuss what he sees. Many children simply need monitoring — we take records and check back every 6 to 12 months. There is no pressure to start treatment unless it is truly beneficial.

At Platinum Orthodontics, consultations are always free. If you have any concerns about your child's smile, call us or start an online smile assessment today.
